About Herman Mah
Family + Community
The District is our home!
-
Born in Vancouver, I have lived in the Pemberton Heights community for over 24 years with my wife Debra and our daughter Julia.
My work experience and education allow me to engage deeply on complex issues facing our community:
-
I currently work as a consultant for a non-profit society.
-
After I was elected to District Council, I took on a part-time position to manage four sites for S.U.C.C.E.S.S. Affordable Housing Society in Vancouver. My role was to lead a small team of dedicated staff, work directly with people looking for affordable housing options and oversee maintenance of the buildings. This position aligned with my personal commitment to serve the community and address the housing crisis that many encounter. After welcoming in the first group of tenants to a new supportive housing project, I left in August 2024 to focus on my District Councillor role.
-
My 6 years at BC Housing provided me with a deep understanding of housing issues faced by those who live in the District.
-
I developed strong leadership skills managing the BCIT Downtown Campus for 9 years.
-
I graduated from UBC with a Commerce degree, majoring in Marketing. This has provided me with a solid business foundation and effective communications skills.
My extensive volunteer work, especially the roles I have undertaken in the District, demonstrates my commitment to our community:
-
Joined the Board of the Canadian Mental Health Association branch for North & West Vancouver in September 2025 as I see the need in our Community for more mental health services.
-
Led Pemberton Heights Community Association as Vice-President/Treasurer for 19 years: brought families together by organizing events such as Canada Day Parade & Picnic, Kris Kringle Christmas Market, Meet Your Neighbour Night at the Corner Stone Bistro, Garage 529 bike registration and clean-up of Ashdown Park.
-
Engaged as Board member, including Chair of the Finance & Admin Committee, of the Downtown Vancouver Association for over 15 years: compiling and presenting community input to Vancouver City Council and staff while policies were being developed.
-
Involved with North Vancouver Community Association Network (NVCAN), including 2 terms on Executive: sharing best practices for community building and engaging with District staff and other organizations to make the District a better place for all people.
-
Served two terms as Vice-Chair (citizen appointee) on the North Vancouver Recreation & Culture Commission: providing community feedback on Commission activities and programs that keep people active in our community.
-
Served two terms on the District’s Community Services Advisory Committee: reviewing applications and recommending grants to societies and organizations to address issues faced by members of our community.
-
Coached and managed teams for North Shore Girls Soccer Club for over 7 years: helping young girls build teamwork skills and enjoy being active.
-
Mentored four different “Littles”, including two youth from the North Shore, for the Big Brothers of Greater Vancouver over 19 years: engaging with young people and helping them by being a positive role-model.
In my spare time, I enjoy outdoor activities, skiing, pickleball and ice hockey (ASHL) at Canlan Sports.
